EG, answered
What are the main risks associated with EG?
Catastrophe losses, which can be large and sudden; adverse development of reserves set aside for past claims; softening prices when capital floods into reinsurance; and investment losses in the bond portfolio when rates move sharply. Climate trends and litigation inflation are the longer-term versions of the first two.
How is EG managed?
Everest is run by its own management team under a board of directors and reports in two segments, Reinsurance and Insurance. Underwriting is managed by line of business, and the investment portfolio that backs its reserves is managed to match the timing of expected claims.
What should be checked before trading EG?
Where the year is in the Atlantic hurricane season, the latest quarterly combined ratio and any reserve charges, the direction of reinsurance pricing at the January and mid-year renewals, the current trend and volatility on the chart, and the bid-ask spread at the time of the order.
What sectors or markets is EG exposed to?
The property and casualty insurance market worldwide: catastrophe, property, casualty, specialty and life reinsurance, plus primary commercial insurance written in the United States, Europe and other markets. The S&P classifies it under reinsurance within financials.
What is the liquidity of EG and how does it trade?
EG trades on the New York Stock Exchange during regular US market hours. As an S&P 500 member with index-fund ownership it has steady daily volume, and the shares can move quickly when a major catastrophe or a reserve charge is announced.
What drives the performance of EG?
Reinsurance and insurance pricing, the size of catastrophe losses in a given year, reserve development on older claims, and investment income on the float. A year with few hurricanes, earthquakes or large industry losses tends to be a good one; a heavy catastrophe year is the opposite.
What costs or structure should a holder of EG be aware of?
It is an ordinary common stock with no fund expense ratio. Holders bear their broker's commissions and the bid-ask spread. Everest pays a quarterly dividend, taxable in the usual way for US-listed equities, and buys back shares from time to time.
What can a reader see on the OHLCX Markets page for EG?
Live price and change, performance over several periods, risk measures such as drawdown and volatility, moving averages, technical indicators, pivot levels, candlestick patterns, a chart in eight bar sizes, and a table of recent bars.
How does EG compare with similar securities?
Its peers are other large reinsurers and specialty insurers such as RenaissanceRe, Arch Capital and Munich Re. Everest is one of the larger property and casualty reinsurers, with a growing primary insurance business that makes its results somewhat less tied to catastrophe seasons than a pure property reinsurer.
